Setting Up Apple Pay and Google Pay with Stripe

Tutorial

Setting Up Apple Pay and Google Pay with Stripe

With the Stripe Elements gateway, your members can pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link as well as a card. MemberGate does most of the setup for you. You don't need an Apple developer account, a Google merchant ID or any files on your site.

Before you start

  • Your site must be connected to Stripe Elements on Payments > Payment Gateway, with your Publishable Key and Secret Key entered.
  • Your site must run on HTTPS, which every MemberGate site does.
1

Check Apple Pay and Google Pay are switched on in Stripe

  1. Log in to your Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings > Payments > Payment methods.
  3. Under Wallets, make sure Apple Pay and Google Pay are turned on. Stripe turns both on by default, so usually there is nothing to change.
2

Let MemberGate register your domains

Stripe only shows Apple Pay and Google Pay on a website address (domain) that is registered to your Stripe account. MemberGate registers both versions of your address for you, for example www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com.

  1. In MemberGate go to Payments > Payment Gateway.
  2. Click Update Payment Gateway Settings.
  3. The results page has a Wallet Payment Setup section showing your domains being registered.

You can check what Stripe did under Settings > Payments > Payment method domains in your Stripe Dashboard.

3

Check everything is ready

  1. Go to Payments > Wallet Setup.
  2. The Wallet Status table shows each domain and each wallet:
    • Ready - the wallet will appear at checkout on that domain.
    • Action Needed - the reason is shown under the domain name. Fix it, then click Register Domains and Re-Check.
    • Not Checked - click Refresh Status.
  3. The Setup Checklist below the table shows anything still left to do.
4

Switch the wallets on in MemberGate

  1. Go to Payments > Payment Gateway.
  2. Under Wallet Gateway Settings, tick ApplePay and GooglePay. The badge beside each one shows whether it is ready.
  3. Click Update Payment Gateway Settings.
5

Test it

  • Apple Pay only appears in Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac that has a card in Apple Wallet.
  • Google Pay appears in Chrome when you are signed in to a Google account with a saved card.
  • While your site uses Stripe test keys, you can pay with your real card and Stripe will not charge it.
  • If a wallet doesn't appear, Stripe's wallet test page shows whether your device and browser can use it.

Going live

A domain registered with test keys is registered for test payments only. When you change to your live keys:

  1. Enter them on Payments > Payment Gateway and click Update Payment Gateway Settings. MemberGate registers your domains for live payments at the same time.
  2. Open Payments > Wallet Setup and check the wallets show Ready. The page title says Live.

Troubleshooting

A domain says "This domain is switched off in the Stripe Dashboard"
Someone turned the domain off under Payment method domains in Stripe. Click Register Domains and Re-Check and MemberGate will turn it back on.
Apple Pay shows Action Needed with a message from Stripe
Stripe could not verify the domain for Apple. The message under the domain says why. Most often the domain doesn't reach your site. Once that's fixed, click Register Domains and Re-Check.
Only the version of my address without www shows Action Needed
If your web host sends that address straight to the www version before it reaches the site, Stripe may not be able to verify it. Checkout always runs on your main address, so the wallets still work there.
Everything is Ready but I don't see the Apple Pay button
Apple Pay only shows in Safari on an Apple device with a card in Wallet. Check with Stripe's wallet test page linked above.
