Setting Up Google Pay with Braintree

Tutorial

Setting Up Google Pay with Braintree

With the Braintree Drop-In gateway, members can pay with the cards saved in their Google account. Testing only needs Google Pay switched on in Braintree. Live payments also need a free Google Pay merchant account and Google's approval of your checkout.

Before you start

  • Your site must be connected to Braintree Drop-In on Payments > Payment Gateway.
1

Switch on Google Pay in Braintree

  1. Log in to your Braintree Control Panel.
  2. Click the gear icon at the top right and choose Account Settings.
  3. Scroll to Payment Methods and switch on Google Pay.
  4. In MemberGate, go to Payments > Wallet Setup and click Refresh Status. The Google Pay column should change from Off at Gateway.

On a Braintree sandbox (test) account that's all you need. Go to Step 4.

2

Get your Google Pay Merchant ID (live accounts only)

  1. Go to the Google Pay & Wallet Console and sign in with the Google account you want to manage payments with.
  2. Choose Merchant as your business type and complete your Business profile.
  3. Open the Google Pay API tab, click Get started, and accept the Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.
  4. Your Merchant ID is shown at the top right of the console. Copy it.
  5. In MemberGate go to Payments > Payment Gateway. Under Wallet Gateway Settings, tick GooglePay and paste the ID into Merchant ID.
  6. Click Update Payment Gateway Settings.
3

Ask Google to approve your website (live accounts only)

Google reviews your checkout before it accepts live Google Pay payments. Take the screenshots first, on your live site, from the page a member chooses a plan or product on through to the confirmation page:

  1. the item or membership plan being chosen,
  2. the checkout page before payment,
  3. the payment options with the Google Pay button showing,
  4. the Google Pay payment sheet that opens when the button is clicked,
  5. the confirmation page after paying.

Then, in the Google Pay & Wallet Console:

  1. Go to Google Pay API > Integrations > Integrate with your website.
  2. Click Add website and enter your site's address.
  3. For the integration type choose Gateway, because Braintree processes the payment.
  4. Upload your screenshots, click Save, then Submit for approval.

Google emails you when it has reviewed your site. Until then, Google Pay isn't ready for live payments.

4

Switch Google Pay on in MemberGate and test

  1. On Payments > Payment Gateway, make sure GooglePay is ticked, then click Update Payment Gateway Settings.
  2. Check Payments > Wallet Setup shows Google Pay as Ready, and that the Setup Checklist has nothing left To Do.
  3. Test in Chrome while signed in to a Google account that has a saved card. On a sandbox account, Braintree swaps the card for a test card, so nothing is charged.

Troubleshooting

Google Pay shows "Off at Gateway"
Google Pay isn't switched on in the Braintree Control Panel. Do Step 1, then click Refresh Status.
"Google Pay: add your Google Pay Merchant ID on the Payment Gateway page"
Live Braintree accounts need the Merchant ID from Step 2.
The Google Pay button doesn't appear
Google Pay only shows when the browser supports it and the person is signed in to Google with a saved card. Try Chrome with a signed-in account.
Google Pay works in testing but live payments fail
Check the Google Pay & Wallet Console to see whether your website has been approved (Step 3).
