Member spotlight interview

A member spotlight article in a question-and-answer format, the kind of story that makes a club feel human to people thinking about joining. This sample interviews a trail runner who went from her first group run to her first ultramarathon, with a short introduction, quick facts, two photos and a pull quote. Use it as the pattern for a monthly feature: swap in your member's answers and photos, keep the questions that work for your club, and link to it from your newsletter.

Interview by the Summit Trail Runners newsletter team

Three years ago Aisha Bello came to her first Saturday Starter run in borrowed shoes. This summer she finished the Silver Rim 50K. We talked to her about nerves, hills and why she still runs with the slowest group once a month.

How did you find Summit Trail Runners?

I had just moved to Boulder for a nursing job and I did not know a single person. A coworker said her running club had a beginner group that never left anyone behind. I nearly turned around in the parking lot, but the run leader spotted me, asked my name and introduced me to two other first-timers. We still run together every Saturday.

What was that first run like?

Honestly? Hard. It was three miles with a lot of walking, and I was sure everyone was waiting for me. Then I noticed the sweeper was chatting the whole way and nobody cared about pace at all. That changed everything.

When did you start thinking about racing?

After the Couch to Trail program. The coaches build you up to a 10K, and the graduation run is the Mesa Trail race in March. Crossing that line with my group cheering was the moment I thought, maybe I am a runner after all.

Nobody cared about my pace. They cared that I came back the next week.

Tell us about the 50K.

It was the hardest and best day of my life. Eight hours and twelve minutes. Four club members volunteered at the aid stations, and one of my Saturday friends paced me for the last ten miles. When I could not eat, she made me. When I wanted to stop, she told terrible jokes until I kept going.

What is your favorite local route?

The Green Mountain loop from Chautauqua, clockwise, at sunrise. It is brutal for the first two miles and then you get the whole Front Range lit up pink.

Why do you still run with the beginners?

Because someone ran at the back for me. Once a month I sweep the Saturday Starter group. Watching someone realize they can do it is better than any medal.

Any advice for someone thinking about joining?

Come to one run. Just one. Tell the leader it is your first time, pick the slowest group and see how you feel. The hardest part is getting out of the car.
