Getting started guide
A getting started guide for new members, written to sit in your members area and answer the questions people ask in their first week. It walks through securing the account, filling in a profile, finding and saving content, choosing which emails and notifications to receive, and where to get help, with a checklist to work through and tips along the way. Rename the menu items to match your own site, swap in a screenshot of your members area, and link it from your welcome email.
Getting started guide
Welcome to Harborview Members Club. This guide takes about ten minutes to read and covers everything you need in your first week: your account, your profile, finding things and getting help.
Your first-week checklist
- Set a strong password you do not use anywhere else
- Add a photo and a few lines about yourself
- Bookmark the members area home page
- Save one article or video to read later
- Pick which emails you want to receive
- Say hello in the introductions forum
1. Secure your account
Your account details are under My Account in the menu at the top of every page once you are signed in. Take a moment to check three things:
- Your email address. This is where receipts, renewal reminders and password resets go, so make sure it is one you check.
- Your password. If you chose a quick one when you joined, change it now to something longer.
- Your billing details. See your plan, next payment date and receipts, and update your card before it expires.
Forgot your password? Choose Forgot password on the sign-in page and we will email you a link to set a new one. The link works once and expires after an hour.
2. Set up your profile
Your profile is how other members get to know you. A photo and a short introduction make a real difference: members with a complete profile get far more replies in the forums.
Go to My Account, then Profile, to add a photo, your town, and a line or two about what brought you here. You choose what other members can see, and you can hide your profile from the member directory altogether.
3. Find your way around

The members area home
Start here. It shows the newest articles, videos and events, plus anything you saved for later.
Search
The search box at the top of every page looks through articles, videos, downloads and forum posts. Try a topic, a name or a phrase.
Saved for later
Choose the star on any page to save it. Everything you save is listed on your members area home.
Events
See what is coming up, register in a click, and find replays of past online sessions in the library.
4. Choose your notifications
You decide what we send you. Under My Account, then Email preferences, you can choose:
| How often | Can you turn it off? | |
|---|---|---|
| Member newsletter | Weekly, on Thursdays | Yes |
| Event reminders | The day before an event you registered for | Yes |
| Forum replies | As they happen, or as a daily summary | Yes |
| Account and billing | Only when something changes | No, these are needed to run your account |
5. Get help

I spent my first evening just exploring the library. By the end of the week I had met three people who live ten minutes away.
Use this page
Make it yours in a few minutes
- Find it in your Control Panel. Go to Content > Page Library and search for "Getting started guide".
- Add it to your site. Choose a title and a department. The page arrives as a draft, with its pictures copied to your site and your site's name already in place.
- Change the words and pictures. Open it in the Membergate editor, replace the sample text and images with your own, and make it live when you are ready.
