Mission and impact
A mission and impact page for a community nonprofit that wants visitors to understand why it exists and trust that it delivers. It opens with a full-width photo and a one-line mission, then a band of headline numbers, the founding story, a gallery of the work, four values and a closing invitation to get involved. Replace the numbers with your own audited figures, retell your founding story in your own voice, and add photos from your programs.

Our mission
Every neighborhood deserves a place to grow
Riverbend Community Gardens turns vacant lots into shared gardens where Columbus families grow their own food, young people learn real skills and the harvest reaches neighbors who need it.
Our story
How it started
In the spring of 2011, a group of neighbors on Riverbend Road got tired of looking at the empty lot at the end of their street. They asked the city for a one-year lease, borrowed a truck, and hauled in forty yards of compost by hand. That first season they grew enough tomatoes to give away at the corner bus stop.
Word spread. A church in Linden offered its back field. A school in Franklinton asked whether students could help. Today Riverbend Community Gardens runs six gardens with 312 family plots, a paid summer program for teens and a harvest share that delivers fresh produce to three neighborhood pantries every week from June to October.
We are still run the way we started: by the people who garden with us. Plot holders elect half of our board, and every garden has a volunteer lead who lives within walking distance.
The work, up close
Family plots, Youth Growers and the harvest share: the three programs at the heart of everything we do.
What we believe
Food is a right
Fresh, affordable vegetables should be within walking distance of every home, not a two-bus trip away.
Neighbors lead
The people who garden with us decide how the gardens are run, from the planting plan to the board.
Learning by doing
Young people learn best with their hands in the soil, a real job to do and adults who take them seriously.
Care for the land
No synthetic pesticides, rain barrels at every garden and compost made on site from neighborhood scraps.
Riverbend didn't just give us a garden. It gave our block a reason to talk to each other again.
Grow with us
Rent a plot, volunteer on a Saturday or support the gardens with a monthly gift.
