Frequently asked questions

A frequently asked questions page for a nonprofit with several programs, grouped into topics so visitors find their answer quickly. A short introduction with quick links leads into sections on garden plots, volunteering, the youth program and giving, followed by a tabbed quick-reference for fees and dates and a closing prompt to get in touch. Replace the questions with the ones your inbox actually receives, keep the answers short, and update fees and dates each season.

Topic 1

Garden plots

How do I get a plot?

Applications open on January 15 each year and close on February 28. Returning plot holders are offered their plot first; new plots are then assigned by lottery, garden by garden. You will hear from us by March 15.

How much does a plot cost?

A standard 4 by 10 foot raised bed is $35 for the season, and a double bed is $60. Our sliding-scale fund covers part or all of the fee for any family who asks. No proof of income is required.

What is included?

Your bed, filled with fresh compost, plus water at every garden, shared hand tools, seed from our seed library and a garden lead to answer your questions.

What are the rules?

Plant by June 1, keep your bed and the path around it weeded, use no synthetic pesticides or herbicides, and give two volunteer hours to the garden over the season. That is it.

What if I go away for a few weeks?

Let your garden lead know. Most gardens have a buddy system, and a neighbor will water and harvest for you.

Topic 2

Volunteering

Do I need gardening experience?

None at all. Every shift starts with a short briefing, and you will work alongside a regular volunteer until you feel confident.

What is the minimum age?

Volunteers aged 14 and up can come on their own with a signed parent form. Younger children are welcome with an adult.

Can my company volunteer as a team?

Yes. We host groups of up to 20 people on weekdays from April through October. Email us at least three weeks ahead to book a date.

Topic 3

Youth Growers

Who can join?

Teens aged 13 to 17 who live in Franklin County. No experience is needed. We hold 30 places at each of our four youth gardens.

Is it paid?

Yes. Every participant who completes the eight-week program earns a $600 stipend, paid in two installments.

When does it run?

Mid-June to mid-August, Monday to Thursday, 9am to 1pm. Applications open on March 1.

Topic 4

Giving

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Riverbend Community Gardens is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and you will receive an email receipt for every gift. Monthly donors also get a year-end summary in January.

Can I change or cancel my monthly gift?

Any time, from your account page or by emailing us. Changes take effect from your next gift.

Do you accept donated tools or materials?

We gladly take hand tools, wheelbarrows, hoses, untreated lumber and wood chips. Please email first so we can tell you which garden needs them most.
