New Lapsed Billing Controls Help Recover Gaps in Membership Billing

Most recurring memberships are designed around continuous billing, but occasionally a payment failure can interrupt that cycle. If a member does not successfully renew until days or weeks later, the time between the failed renewal and the eventual payment may normally go unbilled.

For some membership models, that is perfectly acceptable. For others, particularly SaaS products and services that provide continuous access or ongoing value, those gaps can create a billing problem.

MemberGate's new Lapsed Billing functionality gives site owners more control over how those missed periods are handled.

Account for Time Between Billing Periods

When enabled for a Member Plan, Lapsed Billing can account for the time between an unsuccessful renewal and the date the member eventually renews.

Instead of simply restarting billing from the later payment date, the site owner can choose to recover some or all of the lapsed period.

This is especially useful for memberships where service is intended to remain continuous and billing gaps should not result in unpaid periods of access or service.

Choose How Much Lapsed Time to Recover

Different sites may want to handle a billing lapse differently, so MemberGate allows the site owner to control how far back the system can account for missed billing.

A maximum number of lapsed days can be set for the Member Plan. This allows a site to recover only a defined period even if the member has been away longer.

For sites that require the full billing gap to be accounted for, the limit can instead be set to Unlimited.

Example: A site might choose to recover no more than 30 days of lapsed billing, while a SaaS membership that requires uninterrupted billing could be configured without a maximum-day limit.

Configure Lapsed Billing by Member Plan

Lapsed Billing is configured within the individual Member Plan settings, allowing different plans to follow different rules.

A traditional membership plan may not need to recover missed time at all, while another plan providing an ongoing service may require continuous billing.

This gives site owners the flexibility to use Lapsed Billing only where it makes sense for their membership model.

Better Support for Continuous-Service Memberships

Membership businesses do not all handle failed renewals the same way.

For content memberships, allowing a member to return later and simply resume billing may be appropriate. But SaaS platforms, service memberships, and other continuous-access models may need a way to account for the entire period in which service was expected to remain active.

Lapsed Billing adds that flexibility without requiring every Member Plan on the site to follow the same approach.

More Control Over Failed Renewal Recovery

The new Lapsed Billing options give MemberGate site owners another way to tailor recurring billing to the way their business actually operates.

Whether you want to recover only a limited number of missed days or account for the entire lapsed period, each Member Plan can be configured with the billing rules that make the most sense for that service.
